Brunch at “La Mansión 1783” in Coruña · Restaurant Experience
But today, I’m sitting here and I bring you not only an experience, but also a brunch experience. Who doesn’t love brunch? well, if you are one of those weird people who doesn’t, you can think of it as breakfast or lunch, it’s going to be equally good.
The invitation I received was for an event the day after I played at O Son do Camiño, so the word brunch sounded even better than it usually does.
The name of the event was “Brunch with a view” because their place is located at an iconic place in Coruña. The view was Coruña’s port in La Marina. Beautiful, yes, rainy…that too. It was raining cats and dogs and a sports event happening in the city so I arrived almost late, wet and hungry.
They started by telling us about the story of the place, interesting enough and short enough. It’s built in a protected building, you can only imagine what that means. The amount of work they had to do just to check all those tickboxes that don’t make sense! Bureaucracy is the best, am I right?
But all those paperwork aside, they showed us the place, beautifully decorated to suit the needs and style they had in mind, but keeping the charm of the original building.
The event started with a non-alcoholic cocktail,. It was refreshing, sweet but not too much and very pretty. I loved the way things got started and got the chance to say hello to Raquel from Castigada con salir. We’ve been getting together often because of all these gastronomic events. She’s super nice 🙂
Then, the brunch started. The offer was 3 savoury dishes, 3 sweet dishes.
I must say, I might be the only person that prefers savoury to sweet, so I would have loved if the three first were bigger than the sweet ones. I know, I’m weird. But if you love sweet, that’s your place to be.
The first dish was a strawberry gazpacho with shredded goat cheese. It was a little bit acidic, the strawberry was very subtle, which is good because it was supposed to be savoury and if not, it would have been too much sweetness. The goat cheese wasn’t overwhelming, the way it was added made it nice and gave the dish a little bit more depth than the gazpacho itself had. Nice start. Small, but more than enough.
Second dish: Cheddar and chicken quesadillas. Before I continue, I want to explain something. After they invited me, they asked if I had any food allergy and they insisted a lot on that. Extra points for them. As they ware caring enough to ask twice, I told them if they didn’t mind making my brunch vegetarian, or just swap the meat for anything that wasn’t meat when possible.
Although I eat meat every now and then (less and less each day) I’d rather eat a vegetarian or vegan option most of the time. So, they gave me an adaptation of this dish, made with tofu instead of chicken. Easy peasy. It did the job.
I actually tried a bite of the carnivore version because I wanted to tell you how it was. It was very good too, but if I’m honest, the tofu quesadilla tasted better for me. A win win for them, for me and for the planet. Ask them to veganize or change your brunch and they will do it gladly 🙂
Third dish: Guac on toast with poached egg and seeds. This one was perfectly executed. The toast was perfectly toasted and the egg was amazingly pochéed 😁. The guac was basic, so the egg could be the highlight. A rich yolk that run all over the plate when cut. Good one, would have been the perfect ending for the savoury part of the brunch.
Fourth savoury course: Miniburger duo. One was roasted veggies with honey and mustard, the other pulled pork with homemade bbq sauce. Both options were nice and flavourful. For this one, I have mixed feelings about the vegetarian option.
The chef chose to substitute the pulled pork with tofu, again. In a way that seemed a little bit too easy. The tofu was well cooked and the bbq flavour was there. I would’ve changed the way the tofu was cut. Instead of slices, maybe minced and mixed with the sauce to make it more similar to the pulled pork, or just to let the sauce damp the tofu so it wasn’t as simple. But the effort was there and I appreciate it.
After tasting the savoury dishes, we made a little break from food and drank our coffee or tea. a nice refreshing moment for our stomachs to get ready for the sugar overload that we were about to experience. I’m kidding, it wasn’t so sweet as I’m saying, actually it was very well balanced. But there were four big sweet dishes, and I’m not used to eating sugar. Hyperactive Sílvia here we go 😅
I actually got the chance to seat with one of the owners and we had a wonderful time chatting about everything. We almost didn’t talk about the food and I found him a very nice person to talk to. So I’m glad. You know I’m a people person, so this things make my days.
We started with a light fruit skewer. Nice touch. That’s the perfect way to change flavours in my opinion. Light and easy. No complications and the fruit was ripe and tasty.
The second sweet dish was my favourite, I believe. The berry yogurt was creamy and very tasty. I loved the texture, almost like a mousse.
The shredded coconut helped give it depth and sweetness and the chopped fruit on top offered freshness to lighten it up. Perfect. I would have had that for breakfast alone, that same quantity. It was a whole bowl of yogurt. You won’t be hungry when you finish this brunch, that I can assure you. I almost forgot to say it had the perfect fresh mint touch. Not too much, enough to give it a hint of flavour.
Then, the third sweet dish: Corn sponge with vanilla soup. This one had a grainy texture, a little on the tough side. Let me tell you that was a plus for me, not something to complain about. I know those two words: “grainy and tough” for a cake can seem like a bad thing but I’m a texture freak, and this one was new to me. It wasn’t light and fluffy, it had texture.
The soup was delicate, I really liked it. I would have loved to taste a little bit more of the vanilla. I love vanilla, but I know it’s a very delicate condimient. Overall it was a very beautiful tasty dish. And also, interesting. Extra points for that.
The last dessert was amazingly good. I love torrijas (Spanish style French toasts). This one was made in brioche bread (extra sweetness) and instead of honey or sugar, it was sprinkled with a toffee sauce. I’m nuts for toffee so I really loved it. Actually I can’t decide if I liked this one better than the yogurt. I think I was so full of food that I think about the yogurt as my favourite, but this one…wow.
The raspberry combined perfectly with all the sweetness, I would have paid extra for a bunch of raspberries on top, actually. They would give the dish the perfect balance and it would be more nutritious. But that’s just Sílvia who loves her veggies and fruits too much 😂.
And that was all. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience. The acoustics of the place made it perfect to chat while eating. You could listen to the music while talking and your head wasn’t bursting after a couple of hours even though there were enough people for that. Talking to them, they were happy I noticed they’ve made an effort in everything concerning the experience and not only the food. Apparently they took good care of the volume for the music.
The price is, in my opinion, more than fair. 18€ per person and you only need a minimum of two people. Taking into account only the quantity of food, it pays itself.
My highlights were the quesadilla and the perfectly poached egg among the savoury dishes. And as I told you, the yogurt and the brioche torrija concerning the sweet dishes.
If I could’ve changed something, it would have beem the tofu burger, but taking into account they did it exclusively for me and the pulled pork was nice, I said nothing. Maybe the gazpacho was a bit too acidic to start with. They served at the same time they served the orange juice and after the welcome drink, both on the sweet side, so maybe it that was the intention, contrast.
I hope you enjoyed this post and if you’re ever in Coruña, don’t forget to try the brunch at La Mansión 1783, it’s a nice experience. It’s not just about the food.
