Halloween 2020 series: Barmbrack. Fruit cake with hidden fortune-telling beans.
Tradition says that you have to bury a ring, a coin, a rag, a pea and a stick to do a fortune telling game during Samhain (best known nowadays as Halloween).
Each piece will tell you if you would get married or not next year, or if you would be rich or poor.
I’m known for being a very positive person, so I changed the game a bit. First of all beacuse I really didn’t want to add things into my food that weren’t really food. So, I used beans and a chickpea.
I gave it my own meaning. None of them tells you nothing specific. Each of them mean abundance in a field of your life for the next year’s cycle.
The smallest bean (black eyed pea) predicts that you are going to have abundant health.
The middle sized bean (white bean) predicts that you are going to have abundance in the love field. Not necessarily a couple, it can be self-love or your family or friend’s love.
The chickpea means wealth. Money and finances will be great for you next year.
Finally, the maxi-bean, predicts that you’re going to be happy as a clam next year.
If you celebrate with less people (or more) adjust the number of different types of beans and make sure there can be one for each person.
The most probable result will be that one gets three and another person gets none. But that’s part of the fun.
We do something similar in Spain and Portugal, and I think in some places in América Latina. We celebrate the twelfth night with Roscón de Reyes and we hide a toy and a bean. The toy means good luck, the bean means you’ll have to pay for next year’s Roscón. I always get the bean 😅
Have you ever made Barmbrack? And what about Roscón de Reyes? I hope you try this one and share it with your friends. You still have plenty of time before Halloween 🎃
